What should and shouldn’t I eat to get better looking skin? What are the best foods for healthy skin? That’s something a lot of people wonder about, especially if they have issues with acne, eczema, oily skin, dry skin, or other blemishes. Let me tell you what I currently eat to help my skin look its best and what diet I think works for a lot of people.
When you avoid foods that cause inflammation in the body, like things high in sugar, grains, and deep fried fats, you may see great improvements in your complexion.
Dairy is also a problem for a lot of people, and as they omit the dairy they see their skin clearing up. But natural unprocessed dairy seems to work for a lot of people who usually can’t tolerate it.
I think a mainly low GI, whole foods diet high in healthy fats is the best for most people, especially people dealing with acne. My eating habits are inspired by several different diets; primal, paleo, nourishing traditions, and low-carb high-fat.
If done the right way for you, this way of eating will help balance your hormones, help you stay at your ideal weight, improve your health, and thus give you gorgeous skin.
I focus on eating vegetables, most types of meat, fish, eggs, low GI fruits, and a bit of nuts. I especially love wild game, all kinds of wild berries, olives, and salmon. And my daily breakfast: a smoothie of frozen berries, other fruit, some baby spinach, avocado or a raw egg.
I use butter or coconut oil for cooking with, and cold pressed olive oil in salads. At the moment I don’t eat a lot of organ foods, like liver, but it is something I want to start with as they are extremely nutritious.
This way of eating is by far the most satisfying way I have tried! I get a lot of good fats that keep me full for hours on end, as before when I ate a high-carb whole foods diet I usually got hungry within 3 hours.
For this way of eating to be really healthy I think it’s important to look at where the animal products come from. The healthiest animal products are from wild or free-range animals that eat a natural diet, i.e. grass-fed cows.
I especially avoid products from animals that have been fed or injected with hormones, since I don’t want to risk messing up my own hormones.
Another thing you might be surprised by is that I see saturated fats as healthy fats, since they are good for a healthy hormone balance.
I don’t always eat the most nutritious foods though…Who does?! I don’t want a diet stopping me from experiencing life fully. If I go to Italy I definitely will have some pizza
But most of the time I stay on track, because it keeps me healthy and happy, which allows me to enjoy life even more.
That’s what I think is a great diet for beautiful, clear skin.
So until next time, eat well!
